SRAM - 2x10 Drivetrain

If you're not convinced about the benefits of of SRAM's new 2x10 MTB drive-train set-up, they've created a website to win you over -  http://sram2x10.com/!

Not too sure about the 'less is really more' tag - have you seen the prices for some of the parts?

too litlle might be

The thing with the 2x10 is if they need that much advertising it makes me wonder...

And can you get a low enough gear with 26x36? but then you do loose big gear only with 39x11... Tough 42x11 might be good enough for me, but that is only 28x32...

And then it is a completly new standart size of chainring size, with no proper aftermarket offer...

I was very slow getting into the 3x9 but am now happy with it (altough I still think it isn't a real improvement from 8 speed), so in a couple of year I might want nothing other, but give it some years and let either disappear or get cheaper...

I heard about this back in

I heard about this back in August when I was lucky enough to bump in to a SRAM staffer.  I did recently read something about this making it through to the road market, where the extra large rear cassette makes it a "no brainer" compared to hoiking around with a triple (weight, plus lever and front changer/bottom bracket 'upgrades' if moving up from a road compact, and the issue of a triple rubbing when crossed-over).
Are SRAM cassettes still interchangable with Shimano?  This would make a happy addition to my alpine climbing setup.
Be interesting to see how reliable the chains are, given that 10 speed off road setups are not that common.

Shimano do a 36-tooth '29er'

Shimano do a 36-tooth '29er' cassette, which you could use with a double chain-set, though I'm not sure how it would work on the road as the bottom gear is 12 (12 - 36T)?

Not sure if this 10x2 groupset is compatible with Shimano stuff.  I've also read that from next year top-end Shimano groupsets (XTR and XT) will also be 10-speed, so I guess this will eventually trickle down the product line.

Is the Shimano 29er cassette

Is the Shimano 29er cassette a 10 speed? The road bike has standard Shimano 10 speed.

No...

No, the cassette is 'only' 9 speed.
