Bells

Hi Guys - Sorry that I have been very scarce as of late but playing a bit of hockey at the mo and legs definitley do not recover in time for Sunday mornings.

However, have got out a few times and it got me to thinking about bells. I know it is not very cool to put a bell on our fancy machines, but I have, and I have found that it creates an enormous amount of goodwill with the walking fraternity.

Given that we ride in densely populated areas is it something that we should be advocating as a club in a small attempt to make the rather fussy walkers a little less atagonistic to mountain bikers in general?

Just a thought. Happy riding!

I use one..

...on club rides when I'm leading.  Funny though, I still get walkers jumping out of their skins when I use the bell, so you can't win!!  I also find that horse-riders appreciate it when you warn them you're coming up behind them, either with your bell or simply calling out "cyclist behind".

Happy riding indeed!

 yep, bell comes in handy

yep, bell comes in handy many times on the narrow canal tow paths when walkers are only ever looking ahead of themselves. it doesn't looks so cool but i wouldn't be without it. one cunning option is to mount it upside down so it's not so obvious on your handlebars ;o)

it is de rigeur to have a bell on the Thursday evening godalming group rides, you can make a wonderful harmony with a dozen or so bells. Marvelous for indicating the intention to move off and good for a bit of bonding. Not many people in the way in the evenings...

I usually have one on my bike, best way to warn other users and saves thinking what words to use each time.

The commuting

The commuting solution:  AirZound

Used and recommended for A: Effectiveness and B: Comedy value.

While it would clear the canal paths I'll stick with a friendly "hello" for the time being. Although, I do find you get most grief from muppets who're wearing headphones and wouldn't hear you coming what ever you did.

lol. My mate 'Big Dave'

lol. My mate 'Big Dave' bought one of them back from the states about 8 years ago and it's very funny to see a drivers face when you beep back at them. He has a compressor in his shed which makes filling it up a bit easier..
