The next progression on from our popular Introductory ride, combining rolling hills and a few cheeky short climbs thrown in to test your resolve. All at an easy pace. 

Saunter around finding mud-free tracks if possible

 Epic (sort of) all day MTB ride.  

This is the longer version of a ride I did a few weeks back, which is based around a route that's been published in a few MTB mags over the years.  According to the MBR route guide, it's approx 40km (25miles) and includes a height gain of 860m (we climb Gibbet Hill and Blackdown).  The actual distance will be a longer (around 30miles) as we're starting/finishing at Witley station, so I've set the route grade as red based solely on this, as the route is mostly bridleways, with some singletrack thrown in.

*** Change of plan re-lunch stop as the The Deer Hut pub is closed, so we'll stop at The Links Tavern,or Roundhurst farm shop as plan B!***  Bring some money, along with snacks/drinks for along the route, and the usual tools (tubes/repair kit etc).  Given the route length, we will have to keep the pace brisk, but will stop and re-group as much as possible. I expect the ride to take about 6 hours, based on previous attempts.

The route is fairly weather-proof, apart from the muddy bits, but if the weather is particularly bad, there are a few shortcuts we can take.

After last time's success I've decided to lead another beginners paced ride, this time on the Satuday as I can't do the Sunday morning. As before we'll start at 9.30, allowing anyone who wants to, to start out from Godalming at 9.

We'll meet at the carpark opposite the Jolly Farmer (Harvester) in Puttenham - map:

After a short road stretch we'll hit some bridleways, byways, a disused railway line, a bit of the blackwater valley path and a canal making our way up to the ranges to our tea stop at the canal centre at Mytchett. Depending if the ranges are open or not we'll either cut accross or skirt round them through Normandy and back towards Guildford, climbing over the hogsback and returning via Watts Gallery.

Distance is about 11 (easy and mostly flat!) miles out and 11-12 miles back dependant on the ash ranges being open or closed, there will be an option to shortcut the route back by road for anyone who wants/needs to. This will be far less technical than the last ride and we should cover the ground quicker as the route is flatter and better surfaced.

I am conscious we overran a bit last time but I do believe the route is doable in 4 hours riding (plus tea stop) but as always it'll depend on the pace of the group, any punctures etc. Remember the usual drinks, trail food, money for tea stop, puncture kit, appropriate clothing for the weather and of course a helmet.

Don your waders and galoshes for a splash around the streams, sorry tracks, of South West Surrey for a ride to somewhere not too muddy, hopefully.

Loop out trough Grayshott and onto Midhurst

This will be a leisurely paced ride but with some climbs (worst climbs on tarmac to make easier work of it) up to the surrey hills where we'll pick up a bit of singletrack.

Starting from bramley old station (at 9.30, allowing anyone who wants to, to depart godalming at 9 and ride over) we'll head down the old railway line to warm up, cut up through shamley green/madgehole up to winterfold, make our way over to pitch, hopefully taking in BKB if we have time and depending on the group and then down to peaslake for a well earnt cheese straw and cuppa. Depending on how everyone feels either back up from walking bottom and over the windmill before descending down to and over blackheath or the more direct route back via farley green to black heath etc.

Hopefully the weather will be kind but please bring appropriate layers, drink, energy bars, puncture/tool kit etc and helmet essential. Hoping to bring it in at 4 hours riding time.
