VCGH is very much a mixed club and has an ongoing aim to improve the gender balance of our membership by encouraging more women to join. All our activities are open to both men and women, and in every group there are a few women in the mix, from the intro and social levels right through to the mod+ and pacy groups, TT and race teams. Any trips that are organised will arrange same-sex room-shares, or at least offer the option of single occupancy rooms.

In addition to the mixed activities, there are a number of activities organised for women only which offer a way into the club for those who may not have the confidence to start off in a mixed group, or for those looking for a predominately female environment.

Ladies' Rides & Ladies' Intro Rides

Weekly ladies' rides are posted in the club calendar by experienced leaders Lara O'Keeffe and Ali Siddall.  The format is varied, and rides are focused on consistent group riding in a welcoming and supportive environment.
  • Format: 30-60 miles @ 12-14mph [32-100km @ 19-23kph] with cafe stop. Undulating terrain.
  • Rider level: Beginner to experienced.
Lara and Ali also post ladies' intro rides which offer new female riders, or those who are not sure about their abilities, a good way to start out in group cycling. These will be shorter rides over manageable terrain and will always accommodate the slowest rider. There will be a coffee stop which will allow you time to ask questions and get to know the other riders, and the intro rides are often posted as part of a double-loop, so you can quickly step up the distance and challenge.

If you are interested in joining the ladies' intro rides, please fill out the following form [COMING SOON] (the information will only be used for the purposes of informing the ride leaders about your previous abilities, and will not be shared with any third party).

If you have any questions about ladies-only riding, please don't hesitate to email Lara and Ali.

Ladies' Race Team

New for 2019, the ladies' VCGH race team aims to have a good team presence at a range of races through the winter and summer seasons. The group comprises a range of riders from complete novice to cat 3 racers.

The ladies' race team trains where possible with the men's team (chain-gang through the summer, mod+ and pacy rides all-year round), as well as organising ad-hoc ladies-only rides which will show up on the calendar. Non-race team members are always welcome to join.

Many of the races attended by our race teams (both male and female) are Surrey League races, which means that all participants will need to have first completed two Surrey League preparation sessions. More information is available on the Surrey League Facebook page or website. You will also need to purchase Surrey League Membership if you wish to race in any of the SL races (SL will penalise the club if you don't).

Racers will also need to buy a full race license (silver or gold) through British Cycling.

For more guidance on how to start racing, read the tips in our Racing section or get in touch with Laura Senior.
