Those of you that follow the VCGH Facebook page will have seen over the last few months there has been a fair bit of racing going on. Its been a successful start to the season and hopefully over the coming weeks there will be some race series reports to share.
Our early season successes came from Elliot Brown who quickly racked up points in the Imperial Winter Series to get promotion to cat 3. Our cat 4 riders have been riding in the Surrey League 'Dunsfold' series with some success. Nick Webb, Billy Jones, Steve Davis, Tim Rogers, David Smith, Steve Byers, Mark Herbert and Mark Pritchard have all been in action. Nick Webb has been in the points with some strong sprinting resulting in a 3rd and 6th place from the first 3 events. Billy Jones scored a 7th in event 1 and Mark Herbert added to the points he has from a 3rd place @ Longcross in April with a 7th and 8th places in the first 3 events. That puts Mark Herbert into category 3 after only 4 races in 2016 and Nick Webb only a point away from promotion.
Ride of the season so far goes to Mark Pritchard who raced for only the second time in the last 3 years (Not counting Haute Route) Riding with Nick, Mark H and David at Dunsfold Race #3 the team were by far the most active force in the race. Mark followed a late move by Ryan Pierce (Dorking CC) and they quickly opened up 30 seconds on the group with one lap to go. The team came through the start finish sat on the front of the main bunch, disrupting the chase perfectly. With 3.5km left the escapees were 45 seconds clear with Mark in full head down TT mode, churning out the pace. Unfortunately his companion sat on his wheel with 500m to go and out sprinted him for the win. But, 2nd place and 8 points from a break...a rare thing in cat 4 racing, is an awesome achievement for the team and Mark. Nick won the bunch sprint for his 3rd place (above) and Mark H 6th (above) which topped off a pretty impressive night for the boys.
Duncan Roberson and Chris Parker have also been in action in some cat 3 racing and the Vets Series. Initially at a very wet and cold Longcross race which was more like Paris Roubaix than spring in Surrey. The Vets Series at Dunsfold has been a real eye opener for both of us as its open category, so we race against Cat 1,2,3 & 4 riders. The differences between this and even cat 3 races is evident in pace and change of pace, which is intense to say the least. Its very competitive and fast with pretty much non stop action. Our best placings have been 18th (Duncan) and 16th (Chris) We're competitive so I'm sure there will be success further down the line and its honing our skills for pure cat 3 racing, which might start to seem a bit easier after our experiences here.
Surrey League Cat 4 @ Dunsfold - Promoted by VCGH
That's right, not satisfied with a thriving race team we are also promoting some cat 4 racing this season. The clubs aim for racing is to support the entry level of the sport and nurture our cat 4 riders. As part of this commitment the team are helping the Surrey League run 2 races this summer at Dunsfold.
The first of these is on Friday June 3rd 2016.
If you'd like to come and watch then all you have to do is turn up to Dunsfold for about 6.30pm, racing starts at 7pm and will be 10 laps (about 1hr 10 mins) The second race will be on Friday July 1st 2016 Its often cool and windy so make sure you are wrapped up. When you arrive at the security gate proceed to the perimeter road, turn left and go around the outside of the runway on the perimeter road in a clockwise direction until you see the buildings and cars parked on the far side of the airfield.
Any question contact: Chris Parker.
