VCGH Social Mods to Isle of Wight 2021

While we are still under some COVID restrictions, this trip is being run for VCGH social mod riders. Max total number in combined groups will be 30. We plan to have 3-4 groups of 6-8 riders depending on ride leaders and total numbers. As coffee is available on the ferry we will just stop for lunch at approx. 13:00

On the signup form please indicate:
  1. if you would like to ride down to the ferry (68km Milford, 55km from Wey Hill ), or plan to just enjoy the hilly IOW route (114km).
  2. if you are prepared to lead a group.
  3. for those driving down please also indicate if you have space to take someone back who has ridden down.
You will need to book prebook the 09:00 ferry from Portsmouth returning 17:00, plus I recommend you prebook a Floating Bridge ticket at Cowes to avoid queuing. Links below.

Should the weather be adverse the trip will be cancelled by 6pm the evening before and rescheduled for the following Saturday, 10th July.

Any question please contact Chris Eaton.

The plan is to meet at the Wightlink ferry terminal in Portsmouth on Saturday 3rd July and get the 09:00 ferry over to Fishbourne (45 mins £18:80 return, bookable in advance). From there we'll ride in groups around the island, stop for lunch near Freshwater, plenty of room for multiple groups and then ride on to the Needles for an ice cream and some photos before returning to Fishbourne via the floating bridge in Cowes (£1 bookable in advance)

The trip will take the whole day once we've got down there and back again. It'll be a scenic, testing day of riding.

As with all tours and expeditions you're expected to be able to self navigate, GPS routes are given below. Bring appropriate kit for the weather (it can be cold and windy over there, even if the sun is shining), snacks, and the usual tools.

Trip Details
 Location Isle of Wight
 Date Sat 3rd July 2021
 Pace Groups
  •  Social Moderate (15-16mph / 24-26kph)
Meet Time & Place Meet at 08:30 outside the Wightlink car ferry terminal PO1 2LA. Please have your ticket ready.
How do I get there?    Unfortunately there is only one train from Godalming (06:34) via Haslemere (06:50) leaving early enough to get to Portsmouth Harbour (07:43) before the 09:00 ferry, so preferred options are to drive or cycle.

Depending on signups there will be a social mod group leaving from Milford at 05:30 (if someone volunteers to lead from Milford) Wey Hill at 06:05. Both groups will use this route:

Strava route Milford to Portsmouth 42 miles / 68km
 Ferry Time 09:00
Check in is minimum 15 mins before departure for foot passengers. Have your rebooked tickets ready
 Routes
  • Full route including trip out to Needles. 71 miles / 114 km
LunchLunch at Chessell Pottery Cafe. This is 37 miles / 60km from Fishbourne so we'd expect all groups to arrive between 12:15 and 13:15.

All groups follow the same route to this point, and there's plenty of room for multiple groups of 6 (COVID rules apply)
Return Ferry     Fishbourne return ferries leave at 15:40, 17:00, 17:40. We will hopefully all meet up at Fishbourne for the return trip to Portsmouth. It is likely to be the 17:00 ferry, but return tickets are changeable at no extra cost.
How do I get home? There are two trains an hour at :15 and :45 past the hour from Portsmouth Harbour to Godalming via Haslemere, or if you are driving and have space in your car, please consider offering space to other riders who may be riding down. Third option is to ride back again but I'll leave that to you!
