VCGH Ladies' Isle of Wight 2021

While we are still under some COVID restrictions, this trip is being run for VCGH ladies to keep the max total number in combined groups to 30. We will run a whole club trip a bit later in the spring.

The plan is to meet at the Wightlink ferry terminal in Portsmouth on Sunday 6th June and get the 09:00 ferry over to Fishbourne (45 mins and around £18, bookable in advance). From there we'll ride in groups around the island, stop for lunch near Freshwater, and then ride on to the Needles for an ice cream and some group photos before returning to Fishbourne via the chain ferry in Cowes.

There will be a slightly shorter (but still challenging) route option for the social/intro riders (and anyone else who wants to cut the route short from the cafe stop).

The trip will take the whole day once we've got down there and back again.  It'll be a scenic, testing day of riding.

As with all tours and expeditions you're expected to be able to self navigate, GPS routes are given below. Bring appropriate kit for the weather (it can be cold and windy over there, even if the sun is shining), snacks, and the usual tools.

Trip Details
 Location Isle of Wight
 Date Sun 6th June 2021
 Pace Groups
  •  Ladies Social / Intro (13-14mph / 21-22.5kph)
  •  Ladies Social Endurance (14-15mph / 22.5-24kph)
  •  Ladies Social Moderate (15-16mph / 24-26kph)
Meet Time & Place Meet at 08:30 at the Costa Coffee opposite the Wightlink car ferry terminal PO1 2LA. A group ferry ticket will be bought for all riders (£16 return crossing).
How do I get there?    Unfortunately there are no trains leaving early enough to get to Portsmouth Harbour before the 09:00 ferry, so the options are to drive or cycle.

There will be a social mod group (led by Lara) leaving Milford Station at 05:30, going via Weyhill carpark Haslemere at 06:05. There will also be a social endurance group (led by Annabel) leaving Haslemere at 06:00 to cycle to Portsmouth. Both groups will use this route:
Strava route Milford to Portsmouth 42 miles / 68km
 Ferry Time 09:00
Check in is minimum 15 mins before departure for foot passengers. A group ticket will be booked in advance (by Lara).
 Routes
  • Full route including trip out to Needles. 71 miles / 114 km
  • Mid route cuts off the climb to the Needles. 65 miles / 105km
  • Short route cuts north from the cafe stop. 55 miles / 89km
LunchLunch at Chessell Pottery Cafe. This is 37 miles / 60km from Fishbourne so we'd expect all groups to arrive between 12:15 and 13:15.

All groups follow the same route to this point, so we will have a staggered arrival, but hopefully some overlap which means that if anyone wants to change group at this point, that should be possible (depending on group sizes).
Return Ferry     Fishbourne return ferries leave at 16:40, 17:20, 18:00. We will hopefully all meet up at Fishbourne for the return trip to Portsmouth. It is likely to be the 17:20 ferry, but return tickets are changeable at no extra cost.
How do I get home? There are two trains an hour at :32 and :48 past the hour from Portsmouth Harbour to Godalming via Haslemere, or if you are driving and have space in your car, please consider offering space to other riders who may be riding down. Third option is to ride back again but I'll leave that to you!
