Studio Cycling At Charterhouse (2009/2010)

So Autumn is on its way... time to head indoors and by popular demand that means another offseason training at Charterhouse Sports Club on Wednesday and Thursday evenings 7.30pm. Here follows some words about the sessions...

To help maintain and increase cycling fitness levels during the winter/spring months the club has organised mid week training sessions for VCGH members at Charterhouse Sports Centre, Godalming (map). They will start 30th Sep and run through to May. Initially they will last for an hour but during January they will increase to an hour and a half to assist with early season training. We have agreed two sessions with Charterhouse Club, Wednesday 7:30 and Thursday 7:30.

To ease the administration we have asked members to block book 6 sessions and pay in advance. We are using the PayPal invoice system to email out an invoice containing a paypal button. When payment is received the people are added to the confirm list, email Marco who has kindly put in the effort to get things going this season. A list of confirmed riders and people on the reserve list is given below. Will riders unable to take their booked place please use the forum to advertise a space and people on reserve list and others who didnt make the list please monitor the forum. Again, this is another change from last year to reduce the central administration of this very popular off season training scheme.

Logistics

The logistics are that the session are held every Wednesday and Thursday, starting 7:30 for an hour at Charterhouse Sports Club and cost £8. Usually takes 10 mins to get everybody settled and sorted so classes probably start 7:40 and finish 8:40. Showers and changing rooms available. If you want to arrive early for a chat, suggest we meet up 5/10 minutes before in the cafe just to the left as you go in the main door; some people have expressed a desire to refresh themselves in the pub afterwards (optional).

Charterhouse club requires you bring a small towel and water bottle filled with suitable liquid. On the first session there will be health declaration to fill in (click here to download). Please print off, fill it in and bring it with you on your first session.

This type of training is suitable for all fitness levels as you can work at your own pace. The instructor guides you and plays music with an appropriate tempo to help you get in the rhythm and ride at the right cadence (pedal speed). So for example the instructor says to work at a certain intensity at a cadence of 80, that might be resistance level 18 for one person and level 14 for someone else. It's your choice as to the resistance, it's not a competition, it's your training session so you ride it for your own benefit, and as the weeks go by everybody's fitness improves and you will see the results on the weekend rides.

There is car parking, can be crowded on certain evenings; there is "overflow" parking by turning first left as you drive in rather than turning right towards the main car park. For aerial view of parking click here.

The Bikes (Keiser M3)

The bikes are new to Charterhouse Club and are very good. They measure wattage as well as cadence and have a heart rate monitor built in so you only need to bring a heart rate strap if you have one. The pedals accept normal training shoes with toe strap but also have on the reverse a SPD cleat fitting. For more details on the bike click here.

Any queries email me. Thanks Dave
