In November last year Richard Collin’s son Dan tragically lost his fight against cancer. A number of us who have ridden with Richard over the years plan to undertake a cycling challenge to raise funds and awareness for the Teenage Cancer Trust. The Trust not only provided exceptional clinical support for Dan, they also provided a great deal of support for Richard.
Our plan is to ride from Haslemere to Sheffield and back in a weekend. This is a bit far for a solo ride so the plan is to do a team relay. We will have an overnight stop on Sheffield. Some outline details on the plan are included below.
We have a couple of ‘teams’ already committed to take part but it would be great if we could get a crowd together to make an ‘event’ of the weekend. It should be a lot of fun – especially if we have lots of us on the road supporting each other. It would also be great if we could all raise some money for the Teenage Cancer Trust at the same time.
Please let me (Adam) know if you are interested in getting involved in any capacity (riding / driving) or if you would like any more information / detail on the plans.
Thanks for your support
Get involved: If you want to get involved then let us know. We would like:
• Riders – you can ride as much or as little as you want but probably a minimum of 100km each day (and as much as 750!!)
• Support Drivers (with cars). If you don’t want to ride but have a car with a roof rack (we have some spare bike carriers) then we do need people to support the teams.
The Challenge: Ride from Haslemere to Sheffield and back in a weekend.
It is approximately 375km each way, so over 700km for the weekend
The Date: 12th – 13th July 2014
The Format: It is a bit too far for a solo effort! We will ride the weekend as a team relay, with each team having their own support car (with 6-8 riders per team)
Logistics: We will book hotels and can help coordinate teams / support cars. We will organise some stops on route and will also provide Garmin maps. Once on the road each team will look after themselves!
Costs: There is no charge for the challenge. All personal costs will need to be paid by the riders / crew (e.g. hotel costs, dinner costs, feed stop costs). Fuel costs etc. should be shared by each team
Daylight Hours: Sunrise: 4:57 a.m. Sunset 9:14 p.m. (16hrs 16 mins of daylight). We suggest starting early (5 a.m.) to arrive in Sheffield before it’s dark (and vice versa).
Charity Fundraising: We want to raise as many funds as possible for the Teenage Charity Trust. The Teen Cancer Unit at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield provided unfailing care and support to Dan Collin as he battled cancer. Anything we can raise will make a difference for a teenager who is being supported by the Trust.
Why the Rother Valley Challenge? The Rother Valley Cycling club was the Haslemere cycling club before it merged with the VC Godalming to become VCGH). There is a bigger Rother Valley near Sheffield! Other than Richard, it is the only link we could find between Haslemere and Sheffield!
