Nove Colli 2015

Hello,

Re: NOVE COLLI - 24th May 2015

My name is Andrew Berry, I am a new member of VCGH and in fact have only completed one (though memorable – thank you Peter) club ride.  It was on a glorious Sunday earlier in the year, where 110 or so miles were covered to the relatively unfamiliar, for me, west of our region (me being addicted to Coombe Lane, Leith Hill, coffee in Dorking and tea in Peaslake etc!)

This submission to the club site is however about the Sportive “Nove Colli” or nine hills www.novecolli.it which is held in Cesenatico (home of a certain Marco Pantani), on the east coast of Italy, near Rimini every year; Next year’s event to be held on the 24th May2015.

I completed this in 2013 with an assortment of cyclists I had never met, but who became friends over the trip.  The trip was social but competitive, the town was lovely, the hotel magnificent, the food gorgeous and the cycling very Italian.  This event is now in its 45th year and is very under-visited outside Italy.  The start is flat and fast, with start groups depending on your submitted previous event timings.   As the profile shows we kick up into the nine hills in eastern Tuscany before descending for a flat finish back in Cesenatico.  A full cycle fair takes place over the weekend and the town is devoted to two wheels for the weekend

The Hotel we used was the Maree Hotel www.mareehotel.com in Cesenatico, nice and central, family run and bike friendly.  Indeed bike supportive, with race breakfast (including pasta!) from 0400 to 1200!

We stayed for four nights and we had a great time in the town, on the beach, doing tourism, eating, drinking and cycling.

My wife is not a cyclist (though has been known to stoke on the tandem) but was happy with the beach and things to do in the town, In fact is keen to visit again in 2015.  Bologna is a fantastic place to visit as well:

Flights with BA to Bologna (just over an hour’s drive away) are from £58 one way at the moment, this includes your bike bag if it is the only checked luggage.   My wife and I will be there already in our camper van, so I have two spare bike bags one hard and one soft for free loan.

It’s a lovely event, quite different from the UK – from the mass start, straight up to 27mph and max heart rate in moments within a 700 man peloton, to rolling Italian hills, village run food stops, to gnarly tight switchback descents.  All with great cycle fairs beginning and end, and Italian flare throughout.

I would be happy to act as liaison for a VCGH trip, sporting our new club kit of course.  The trip could easily be used as spring training or just a nice trip away for cyclists and non-cyclists alike

I live in Nightingale rd, Godalming, tel :01483421052 if you want to talk it through, email andrewjmberry@gmail.com.  Entries go quickly, within a few hours, the opening date for registration has been released as 4th November at 1000 Italian time (0900uk).  You have to register on the site before you can apply for an entry. Have a look at the web site to get a feel.  Give me a call or perhaps even come out for a ride and see if we can get a VCGH group out to Italy.

PS another great event but closer to home is the “Ashdown Hell” in February – it gets you on the bike in winter!

Regards

Andrew
