A Ride for all Abilities Thu 18th - Mon 22nd September 2014
We're going to make this a mixed ability expedition to the sites and beaches of Normandy, all ride groups are welcome - we'll make sure there's a ride to stretch (but hopefully not break you) each day. It will be a ferry from Portsmouth on Thursday 18th September. Eating and sleeping on board, landing early doors in the beautiful walled city of St Malo.
The first day is a biggie about 165 km from St Malo to the ancient town of Bayeux taking in Mont Saint-Michel before tuning in land to traverse the Cherbourg Peninsula.
We are going to base ourselves for this long weekend at the Grand Hotel du Luxembourg in Bayeux, a well appointed affordable hotel we stayed at in 2011 right in the centre of town. If you feel day one from St Malo to Bayeux is a step too far you are more than welcome do the more modest 100km ride from Cherbourg to Bayeux or bring a car over straight to the hotel.
The plan is to have two full days of cycling on Saturday and Sunday exploring Normandy, particularly the events and places impacted by that fateful day in June 1944. The usual shape, a morning ride to a coffee stop, lunch in a bistro and then an afternoon blast back to our hotel.
On Monday 22nd September we'll cycle the 100 km odd to Cherbourg, catch the late afternoon fast-cat getting us to Portsmouth in a little under 3 hours. From Portsmouth a train (for all but the nutters) back to Haslemere , Godalming or Guildford.
Costs will be modest, in the order of £350 plus ferries and food. Luggage will be transported from Godalming to the our hotel in Bayeux and back again by the (yet to volunteer) support crew.
Bring it on.
