In The Slipstream of the Tour
With Yorkshire hosting the grand depart in this year's Tour de France, there could be no better time to take in some of the soon-to-become iconic climbs and cycle in the wake of the world's greatest riders amongst the glorious scenery of the Yorkshire Dales.
Staying near the delightful village of Reeth in Swaledale, the plan is to ride on three consecutive days over a long weekend. The routes will be tough and whilst the climbs maybe short by alpine standards the gradients more than compensate, with most of the major climbs having a maximum gradient of between 25 and 30%. Bring a 32 tooth casette!
The plan is to arrive on Friday 15th August. Staying at the delightful CB Inn in Arkengarthdale http://www.charlesbathurst-arkengarthdale.co.uk. as they have a great reputation as hostellery for cycling groups and serve good food. Prices for 3 nights are £252 per person, which includes bed, breakfast and evening meal (based on two people sharing a superior twin). Double rooms are available for £450 for 3 nights again including bed, breakfast and evening meal. The hotel will do a 2 night deal if required. All they require is £75 deposit per room. Given the location and the time of year I would reccomend moving quickly to reserve.
In terms of Riding I plan to have 2 days riding of between 100-140Km with no more than 3500M climing per day and then a shorter route for the Monday for those who want to make the most of the weekend. GPX files will be made available nearer the time.
If you look through Simon Warren's 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs, it's worth checking out Fleet Moss, Oxnop Scar, The Stang, Tan Hill and the infamous Buttertubs Pass, then you'll get a better idea of the terrain and why this year's opening Tour stage will be so tough for the likes of Mark Cavendish.
